So 2013 is over. A year of blessings and heartache, laughter and weeping. A year of changes and tradition. Of things lost and things gained. I’ve committed myself to focus on the blessings and look forward to the New Year.
One of the first things I did this year was go see the movie, Lone Survivor, the true story of four Navy SEALS on a heroic covert mission in Afghanistan. It’s based on the book from Marcus Luttrell of the same title, the only survivor of that mission.
The movie starts out with footage of the training those men go through to become a SEAL. It was astounding and brutal. It shows the self-determination both mentally and physically to meet their goal to be the very best. Sorry GI Jane, there’s no way you could pass it.
The movie goes on to portray the events of that fateful day and the heroism those men went through to kill the Taliban and fight for our freedom. Marcus Luttrell did a stupendous job relaying the courage of his team mates, as he calls them. It was riveting and tearful.
At the end you saw pictures of the men who sacrificed their lives that day. Pictures of their wedding, babies, families. It brought it all home. I can’t remember the last time I sat through a movie where you could hear a pin drop.
Vets, I can never show you how much I love and respect your service to our country outside of flying my flag to honor you and go out of my way to shake your hand and tell you “thank you for your service” when I see you in public. I’ve even shouted it out of my car window in a drive-by. All that seems so stupid compared to what you really do for us. I sincerely revere your service.
For the freedom haters and those that disdain America out there that are saying this movie is total propaganda and pro-war or even pro-America? You’re an idiot and an Arschloch (German slang…you can figure it out). War is hell. These brave men and women join because they LOVE this country and do what their country asks of them….and some make the ultimate sacrifice.
To you politicians that just voted to cut our military retirement, you should be ashamed of yourselves…republicans and democrats. You both suck and it’s a disgrace.
Jesus said “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends”. John 15:13. No truer words were ever spoken.
